BALLOT and Important updates

Since the last update much has happened as you will all be well aware regarding the Croke Park Agreement and future campaigns.

First of all, well done to NQTs and NPTs who had been campaigning for a No vote to the LRC Proposals, on the extension of the Croke Park Agreement. The 69% no vote was a clear signal to the Government that INTO Members have taken enough, have given the fair share of their pay, and have had their conditions changed to the final acceptable degree.

Now that the No vote has been secured, we must now campaign for a YES VOTE, this time, in favour of industrial action.

After meeting last week, the executives of all three teacher unions (ASTI, TUI and INTO) made a joint decision to ballot for industrial action. This is as a result of a threat that still remains to pay and conditions, but now we have the ability to resist. The press release from the unions can be viewed here

It is very important to note that this does not mean immediate strike the day after the votes are counted, but members should be aware that it is a possibility, and should not be feared. Strike is a trade union's strongest weapon and if a Yes Vote is acheived, it will be called upon against Government Attacks. Branches and Districts are currently meeting to devise a strategy of industrial actions up to and including strike action in anticipation of a Yes Vote.

Important dates for this ballot are 13th - 16th May 2013. This is the date span in which the INTO Ballot will take place. This will be an in-person ballot, NOT a postal ballot so every effort will have to be made to make your meeting depending on your location. Details of these specially called meetings will be on www.into.ie very soon this week.

It is very important that we all vote, regardless of our choice, and for our voices to be heard. It is also important to remember that even though the LRC Proposals were rejected by the trade unions, Government intensions are to continue with their austerity agenda, looking to cut pay, and to make public servants shoulder the burden of lack of growth in the country.
